“Precious Lord, Take My Hand” by Thomas Dorsey

“Precious Lord, Take My Hand” by Thomas Dorsey

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I’m weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand, precious Lord
Lead me home

When my way groweth drear
Precious Lord, linger near
When my light is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand, precious Lord
Lead me on

When the darkness appears
And the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet
Hold my hand
Take my hand, precious Lord
Lead me on

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I’m weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand, precious Lord
Lead me home

Songwriter: Thomas A. Dorsey

Dear God, we sang this song in church on Sunday. My wife lead the singing and she told be beforehand the background of how this song was written (see the interview with Mr. Dorsey above). It reminded me of the background for “It Is Well With My Soul” (Horatio Spafford). Mr. Dorsey wrote this after he lost his wife, and shortly thereafter his daughter, in childbirth. He was devastated. This song was one way he expressed his pain and his faith.

I’ve had my own times when I’ve been tired, weak, and worn. I’m grateful to not be there now, but I know I’ll be there again. No, tonight, my heart is with a friend who just lost a pregnancy. Her situation is similar to Dorsey”s and anyone else who has suffered the loss of a child or spouse. I’ve been there. I know that pain.

Here’s a good rendition of the song:

Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit, please comfort my friend tonight. I know she hurts. I know she still has to go through some medical procedures. I am sorry for her. I know many are. We want to wrap her up and let her know she is loved. Let her know that you love her. Please help her to feel your love through this. Help her to find her shelter and comfort in you. Help her to find you through the pain she is experiencing. Be very real to her.

I pray all of this in your name,

Amen

MLK

Dear God, it’s the day we observe the birth and life of Martin Luther King, Jr. This year, it is January 16. The actual day was yesterday, in 1929. Ninety-four years ago. Conceivably, he could still be alive today but for what happened 55 years ago this year on April 4.

I run a nonprofit that serves low-income people. I’ve sometimes been asked why our nonprofit observes MLK and not President’s Day. It’s a good question. I haven’t had a good answer for it, but I actually took some time to think about it this morning, and I think this picture exemplifies why I put honoring him on a different level than honoring presidents. He was willing to purposefully put himself in danger and jeopardy for the sake of others. While the men who have been president have often sacrificed to get the office, they were doing it as much for themselves as they were for the country. But my perception is that MLK was willing to use his political capital and spend it on others. He risked things that I don’t believe more than a few presidents risked. He could have stayed at home, written books, and make great speeches. Instead, he went to Birmingham, got arrested for trying to stand up for others and then, when eight white pastors wrote public statement while he was in jail, rebuking him and his followers, he wrote one of the most eloquent pieces of literature I’ve ever read (Letter from a Birmingham Jail).

So here I am. I have political capital in my small community. How do I use it? Do I make myself uncomfortable for others? Do I use it for them, or do I use it for me? I was asked to spend some of my capital this weekend for something that I didn’t think was a wise use of it (and it didn’t fit into this sort of category so I have no regrets). That was an easy no. But are there other things that your Holy Spirit puts on my heart that I decline? Do I really care about others, or do I just care so long as it’s not too inconvenient for me?

Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit, please guide me. Speak to me. Give me ears to hear. Give me eyes to see. I know MLK wasn’t perfect. I know he had weakness and sin in his life. I do too. I also know that he seemed to really love you. He seemed to not only be able to hear your Holy Spirit directing him, but also willing to respond and obey. I hate to pray this because I am afraid of what it would mean for me, but give me that ability and willingness too.

Amen

Daniel 4:24-32

“The Madness of King Nebuchadnezzar” by Matthew Clark. From Revealed: A Storybook Bible for Grown-Ups by Ned Bustard

24 “‘This is what the dream means, Your Majesty, and what the Most High has declared will happen to my lord the king. 25 You will be driven from human society, and you will live in the fields with the wild animals. You will eat grass like a cow, and you will be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses. 26 But the stump and roots of the tree were left in the ground. This means that you will receive your kingdom back again when you have learned that heaven rules.

27 “‘King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.’

28 “But all these things did happen to King Nebuchadnezzar. 29 Twelve months later he was taking a walk on the flat roof of the royal palace in Babylon. 30 As he looked out across the city, he said, ‘Look at this great city of Babylon! By my own mighty power, I have built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my majestic splendor.’

31 “While these words were still in his mouth, a voice called down from heaven, ‘O King Nebuchadnezzar, this message is for you! You are no longer ruler of this kingdom. 32 You will be driven from human society. You will live in the fields with the wild animals, and you will eat grass like a cow. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses.’

Daniel 4:24-32

Dear God, this story convicts me this morning. I found myself jokingly talking like Nebuchadnezzar this morning. I have a tricky issue I’m trying to think through, and I knew I wanted to spend some time with you in earnest prayer about it this morning, but I also had some ideas of my own. So as I talked to my wife about it, I jokingly said that I had come up with some ideas, but I would check in with the Holy Spirit to see if He had any thoughts on the matter, as if it would be an automatic ratification of what I had come up with. As if I could do any of this on my own.

Daniel’s words are for me this morning: “Stop sinning and do what is right.” In this case, it’s just hubris. But the truth is, the ideas I came up with overnight, while they were good, I do think they came from you and you speaking to me and not from me. No, I’m a fool. I’m vain. I want to be respected. I want to be liked. But you are the author of everything good, not only in my life but in me as well. If I have any good thoughts, they are from you. If I have any good decisions or counsel to provide someone else, it is from you. You are my only hope. You are the only thing that keeps me from making a complete disaster of my life. You and you alone.

As I look at this image created by Matthew Clark it can be a little hard to see what all he is putting in there. I see what I think is a snake coming around Nebuchadnezzar’s neck and under his beard. It’s almost like he’s wearing a helmet with oxen horns and ears. It looks like his mouth is hanging open. This is what it looks like when we descend into ourselves.

I want to reprint here what Bustard shares about this piece:

Verse 33 continues with, “Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles’ feathers, and his nails were like birds’ claws.” [Matthew Clark] writes, “the ‘horns of divinity’ appear in many ancient Sumerian and Babylonian idols. Also, the ancient peoples often thought of crazy people as touched by divinity. So, ironically, Nebuchadnezzar achieved what he desired to accomplish in chapter three when he commissioned the golden statue of himself–but not exactly the way he wanted!” Ultimately the king recovered his sanity and could “praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, for all his works are right and his ways are just; and those who walk in pride he is able to humble.”

Father, I am humble before you right now. I am an arrogant fool, and I am sorry. I experience success and I count is as credit to me. It is not. It is you. It is all about you. I pray that my life today might be about worshipping you and carrying you into the world. I pray that those who encounter me might experience a piece of you and your Holy Spirit today. My utmost for your highest. All that I am for all that you are. Take my life, Lord, and let it be consecrated unto you.

I pray all of this in the name of the Lord of Lords, the King of King, and my God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit,

Amen

“Ready for the Storm” by Rich Mullins

“Ready for the Storm” by Rich Mullins

The waves crash in
The tide rolls out
It’s an angry sea
But there is no doubt
That the lighthouse
Will keep shining out
To warn a lonely sailor

And the lightning strikes
And the wind cuts cold
Through the sailor’s bones
Through the sailor’s soul
‘Til there’s nothing left
That he can hold
Except a rolling ocean

Oh, I am ready for the storm
Yes, sir, ready
I am ready for the storm
I’m ready for the storm

Oh, give me mercy
For my dreams
‘Cause every confrontation seems
To tell me
What it really means
To be this lonely sailor

And when the sky begins to clear
The sun it melts away my fear
And I cry a silent weary tear
For those who mean to love me

Oh, I am ready for the storm
Yes, sir, ready
I am ready for the storm
I’m ready for the storm

The distance it is no real friend
And time will take its time
And you will find that in the end
It brings you me
This lonely sailor

And when You take me by the hand
And You love me, Lord, You love me
And I should have realized
I had no reasons to be frightened

Oh, I am ready for the storm
Yes, sir, ready
I am ready for the storm
Yes, sir, ready
I am ready for the storm
Yes, sir, ready
I am ready for the storm
I’m ready for the storm

Written by Dougie MacLean

Dear God, here are my thoughts on this song I know through Rich Mullins. It’s one of those songs I’ve never paid must attention to regarding the meaning of the verses. I can just sing along with the chorus.

Verse 1: I just picture the song writer, Dougie MacLean, sitting on a rocky coast in Ireland (to hear him sing he sounds Irish) and watching the waves crash against the shore while a lighthouse sits nearby. He’s imaging the relationships between the sailor, the boat, the water, the shore, the wind, and that lighthouse. From nature’s standpoint, the sailor is the only thing that is superfluous. They are all there for him. The sailor needs the boat. He needs the water to travel wherever he is going or hunt for whatever he is fishing for. He needs the shore for his life off of the boat. He even needs the wind, although he doesn’t need the storm. He needs the lighthouse to direct him from crashing into the shore. But none of these things need him. Their existence would be the same if he was or wasn’t there–well, maybe not the boat since the boat would be docked without the sailor.

Verse 2: The confrontations in my life leave me feeling like this sailor: Vulnerable. In danger. Dependent. Needing to struggle to survive. Lonely. “For those who mean to love me.” That could mean so many things. Did they love him and do the right things to confront him, but he rejected them? Did they reject him for the wrong reasons? With the sky clearing and the sun melting away fears…you know, this almost makes me think of someone going through rehab. The confrontation–intervention. The loneliness. The storm of getting sober. The lighthouse guiding to shore, but protecting as well. The sobriety melting away the fears. The tear realizing how others were loving him through the intervention. I could be totally wrong, but that’s what came to mind when I started to ponder the words a little.

Verse 3: Playing with my sobriety theory, the difficult thing about addiction is that it doesn’t really pass with time. Oh, perhaps it does a little, but it’s only one slip away. The distance is no real friend. You can still be lonely, even in your sobriety. But you take us by the hand, God. You comfort us. Love us. Give us peace. And the more we get to know you the more we realize that we have nothing to really fear. You are our hope and loving you is what it’s ultimately all about.

Father, I will never sing with passion that I am ready for the storm. Okay, never say never, but it is hard to imagine egging on Satan, you, or anything else in that way. But there are times when I have to set my face to the wind and just decide I’m going to do better, whatever that “better” might be. Life can be lonely, but I am blessed beyond measure by the wife you’ve given to me. And I’m not just saying that because that is what Christian husbands are supposed to say about their wives. She is unbelievable and amazing. She is so good for me. You do so much in me through her. Thank you that, for at least this moment, I am not a lonely sailor.

I pray all of this in the name of you, your son, and your Holy Spirit,

Amen

Matthew 6:22-23

“Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, your whole body is filled with darkness. And if the light you think you have is actually darkness, how deep that darkness is!
Matthew 6:22-33

Dear God, I looked at a couple of translations of this passage this morning because I wanted to make sure I was reading it right. This translation above is from the New Living Translation. It is what I read first, but I actually think I like it the best. It basically says, to me, that what I take into my body through my eyes (I would add through my ears as well) will color my entire being. If I take in hate, fear, lustful things, greed, gluttony, etc. then my being will be colored by those things. If the shows I watch, the podcasts I listen to, the music I listen to, the news I consume is filled with these things then I cannot help but be tainted by them. I wonder what the things people took in through their eyes to which Jesus was referring here were like 2,000 years ago. What kinds of things did they consume?

So what does a life look like that is dedicated to only allowing light into my body. Sadly, I cannot use my own life as an example because, while I let a lot of your light in during the day, it’s not exclusively your light. It’s not all about you. I listen to some secular music. I watch some secular movies that include violence, sex that does not reflect your intent, hate, prejudice, covetousness, etc. I don’t consume too much news, so I have that going for me.

Father, a good first step would probably be that I would allow more light in that darkness. At the end of each day, it would be nice if I could look back and see that I saw and heard things that reflected your majesty, glory, and light than I looked at things of the world. So help me to do that. Help me to let your light in today. Do it all for my good and your glory.

I pray in your name, the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit,

Amen

John 2:1-11

“The Wedding At Cana” by Paolo Veronese

The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration. The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus’ mother told him, “They have no more wine.” “Dear woman, that’s not our problem,” Jesus replied. “My time has not yet come.” But his mother told the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Standing nearby were six stone water jars, used for Jewish ceremonial washing. Each could hold twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” When the jars had been filled, he said, “Now dip some out, and take it to the master of ceremonies.” So the servants followed his instructions. When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, not knowing where it had come from (though, of course, the servants knew), he called the bridegroom over. “A host always serves the best wine first,” he said. “Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!” This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
John 2:1-11

Dear God, I understand why Mr. Veronese put Jesus in the middle of the image, but I’d have much rather he placed him off to the side somewhere. Maybe a little more inconspicuous. I’m guessing the bride and groom are the ones on the far left, with the bride wearing a white gown. Maybe the mater of ceremonies is the man in the ornate white outfit standing behind the man pouring out the water jar int a wine container. I think he’s holding a glass. Frankly, there’s a ton to see here. I just looked up an article analyzing the painting and it was quite extensive. I don’t think I’ll spend too much time doing that here.

As a Baptist who has lived and worshipped with Catholics closely for 12 years, I now know that this is one of the stories they use to justify Mary’s influence over you, even to this day. Jesus didn’t want to, telling her it wasn’t there problem, but Mary ignored him and assumed he would listen to her anyway. I’ve always wondered if this was actually the right thing for her to do. Was Mary wrong to have pushed him like this?

I wonder what she expected of Jesus going forward. She knew he was in the new phase of his life. I’m sure she had seen him do miracles over the years. Almost like being Superman’s mom, knowing his secret. Was it time to let the secret out? Was it time to release Jesus on the world? Will the predictions of her Magnificat come true?

The truth is, she had zero idea how this was going to turn out. She, along with the entire Jewish people/nation, had a paradigm of freedom and victory. You were going to bring down princes from their thrones. You were going to humble the exalted. You would send the rich away empty, but you would fill the hungry. You would fulfill your promises. It just didn’t look like she thought it would look.

Now, I sit here some days and I try to parse out what I have been taught you will do in the world vs. what the evidence shows you will do in the world. In a macro look at history, we are in such a small part of the timeline right now, and, frankly, even though the Christians in country tends to have placed itself in the role as your chosen people, we are not Israel. We are only one more power on the earth that rose, and will, at some point, decline. Perhaps the decline has started already. I don’t know. All I know is that it is so easy to see the United States as so central to your plans when my only perspective is that of about 5% of the world who lives here–from within the country–but we need to remember that there are more Christians who live outside of the United States than in it. Maybe your people are no longer defined by an organized government. Maybe we are just supposed to be a society that lives and moves without caring about national borders.

Father, this has been a lot of talk to simply say that I don’t know. I don’t know what you are doing in the grand scheme of things. I don’t even know what you are doing in my tiny life. You have me on a need-to-know basis, and I don’t really need to know much. In fact, the less I know the less I’ll mess things up. So help me to be obedient to you today. Help me to do exactly what you want me to do tomorrow. Be glorified in my life and be my God.

I pray all of this in your holy Name,

Amen

Titus 2:12

And we are instructed to turn from godless living and sinful pleasures. We should live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to God,
Titus 2:12

Dear God, there is a line between changing the world and living in it. It’s your job to change the world. It’s my job to live in my small corner of it and impact what I can through the sphere of influence you’ve given to me.

I think too many people right now are obsessed with changing the world from the top down. I ran into a friend at the store yesterday and somehow our conversation about the drought and how hard it has been on his ranching turned into a rant about how our country is going downhill because of its leadership. I tried to bring it back by pointing out some of the “idol” work I’ve done over the last two and a half years, asking myself what my idols are. Government? Health? Economy? Military? Wife? Children? Not all of these have been idols for me, but some of them certainly have. They are what I want to put my certainty in instead of putting my certainty in you and you alone.

But if I can “live in this evil world with wisdom, righteousness, and devotion to [you],” then I have a chance of being part of your kingdom coming and your will being done on earth as it is in heaven from the ground up. You don’t build a house starting with the roof and working down to the foundation and the soil. First you have to deal with the grassroots–the soil. Then the foundation, walls, roof, and finally finish out the inside.

Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit, I pray under submission to your authority that you will guide me today. Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Bring those I love one step closer to you. Bring me a step closer to you as well. You are my God. I am your grateful and loving servant.

Amen

Numbers 6:22-27

22 Then the Lord said to Moses, 23 “Tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel with this special blessing:

2‘May the Lord bless you
    and protect you.
25 May the Lord smile on you
    and be gracious to you.
26 May the Lord show you his favor
    and give you his peace.’

27 Whenever Aaron and his sons bless the people of Israel in my name, I myself will bless them.”

Numbers 6:22-27

Dear God, this was the Old Testament reading on Sunday, New Year’s Day. While I was reading it I thought about wanting to spend some time with it in this setting. When I sat down this morning to do it I thought I would go back and find the video that came out of the UK in 2020 during the pandemic that was quite beautiful with people singing the song in isolation, but combined through technology. When I searched YouTube for it this morning, I found this international version. I was so moved by it after watching it for just a minute, I called my wife in and we ended up holding each other and watching it. I had chills. She cried. There’s is something about watching your creation worship you and do its best to spread your love into the world that is…well, words fail me.

The part of the song when they repeat over and over again, “He is for you, He is for you.” It reminds me of the scene in Good Will Hunting when Robin Williams’s therapist character repeats to Will, “It’s not your fault.” Will brushes it off at first, but Williams keeps repeating it until it starts to sink in. That’s what this reminds me of.

“He is for you.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“No, you don’t. He is for you.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“No, you don’t. He is for you.”

“What are you doing?”

“He is for you.”

“Don’t mess with me!”

“He is for you.”

“Don’t do it. Not you!”

“He is for you.”

That’s when it starts to sink in. You are for me. You are for my wife. You are for my children. My parents. My siblings, nieces, and nephews. You are for not only the Americans, but your creation all over the world. You are for me. You are for them. You are for us!

Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, I pray under your authority that my life would be an extension of you being for your creation. You are my God. Thank you for your blessing. Thank you for keeping me. Thank you for letting your face smile upon me. Thank you for being gracious to me. Thank you for showing me your favor. Thank you for your peace.

Amen

Revelation 22

22 Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations.

No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.

Then the angel said to me, “Everything you have heard and seen is trustworthy and true. The Lord God, who inspires his prophets, has sent his angel to tell his servants what will happen soon.”

“Look, I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the words of prophecy written in this book.”

I, John, am the one who heard and saw all these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me. But he said, “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers the prophets, as well as all who obey what is written in this book. Worship only God!”

10 Then he instructed me, “Do not seal up the prophetic words in this book, for the time is near. 11 Let the one who is doing harm continue to do harm; let the one who is vile continue to be vile; let the one who is righteous continue to live righteously; let the one who is holy continue to be holy.”

12 “Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

14 Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. 15 Outside the city are the dogs—the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.

16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.”

17 The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life. 18 And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. 19 And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book.

20 He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!”

Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!

21 May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s holy people.

Revelation 22

Dear God, I finished listening to the Bible in a Year podcast from Ascension Press yesterday, and it obviously ended with…well, it ended with the end of Hebrews, but this chapter was part of the podcast too, and it caught my ear. I’ll confess–and you know–that I did not listen intently every day. Some of it washed over me. Some of it sank in. Some of it went right by, but then Father Mike’s commentary on it helped it double back and sink in.

I guess I’m saying all of this because a lot of Revelation just went past me and I didn’t really care. There, I said it. I’m sorry, but I’ve never really cared much about Revelation. I figure I will understand it when I get to heaven one day, but until then it will remain a haze mystery. But John caught my ear at the end of the book.

I don’t know what soon means. I mean, it’s been over 1,900 years since it was written. Did you come and go before I was born? Are you still coming? With the way time and space work in your realm, is eternity always happening and you came, you are coming, and your are still to come? I don’t know. But I love what the New Living Translation credits John with saying here: “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!”

Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit, come. Come in my life. Come in my community. Come in my country. Come in my world. And show me the little part you have for me to play in all of this. I start back to work in earnest tomorrow for 2023. May I wake up every morning calling on you to come to this earth in my life and through my life.

Amen! Come, Lord Jesus.

Encouragements and Affirmations

Dear God, I was talking with a friend recently about a vision they had of a visitation by you. They actually saw you walk into a room. It was actually Jesus and his mother Mary. Jesus was watching my friend working on a project like a proud parent–just delighted in the performance regardless of how “good” it was–while Mary only had eyes for Jesus, her God and her son. It told the person to not miss the moment of your encouragement and affirmation for them. Too often we miss the moments when you show up to affirm what we are doing. I wanted to make sure my friend didn’t miss you, your love, and your affirmation.

Of course, I’ve talked about different times you found biblical characters and affirmed them. Hagar after she ran away and then Hagar after Abraham sent her away to die with Ishmael. Jacob and his angel visitation. Naomi, at least for a while, missed what you had given her in Ruth. Mary and the shepherds, Simeon and Anna after Jesus’s birth, not to mention the wise men and their affirmation. Peter and the Holy Spirit’s anointing at Pentecost.

You’ve given me affirmations too. Just little encouragements at just the right time. Little things to help me see that I am on the right track. I will always remember the email I received about 20 months ago that encouraged me and has sustained me through the last very difficult 19 months. I recently found myself right in the middle of your plan regarding something that wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t reluctantly taken a step of obedience in what I was feeling nudged by you to do.

You have also raised up friends, both old and new, to encourage me. We had dinner with another couple last night, and knowing them has been such an encouragement. We’ve met two other couples this week experiencing the same kind of pain my wife and I are experiencing as a couple. While it doesn’t lessen the pain, it gives all of us extra shoulders upon which to carry it.

Father, we are about to start 2023. I don’t know what it will hold. I don’t know what or if I will be typing to you 365 days from now. But I don’t need to know. I just want to love you, worship you, and learn how to love you better so I will be the best possibly worshipper of you when I arrive in heaven one day. So let your kingdom come and your will be done in this world, and use my life however you need to in accomplishing that. Give me this day my daily bread. Forgive me of my many sins, and show me how I need to forgive others–for their sake and for mine. Lead me away from temptations. Deliver me from the plans Satan has laid out for me. And you know my prayers and hopes for those I love. My family. My friends. My fellow citizens of this world. Move, Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit. I pray all of this submitted to your authority over my life and this world.

Amen
