John 1:43-51

43 The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” 44 Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.

45 Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”

46 “Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”

“Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.

47 As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel—a man of complete integrity.”

48 “How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked.

Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”

49 Then Nathanael exclaimed, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God—the King of Israel!”

50 Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” 51 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”

Dear God, okay, the first time I read this I thought, “Oh, how I would love to get that compliment from Jesus: A man of complete integrity.” I read one translation that said, “There is n duplicity in him.” I love that. I would love for you to be able to say there is no duplicity in me. But then I reread the story and I noticed that Nathanael is certainly flawed. Just his supremacist attitude towards Nazareth. That shows he has a bit of an attitude born out of insecurity.

I just looked it up and found that John is the only one who tells us about Nathanael. He doesn’t eventually become one of the 12. Unless Nathanael went by a different name. This story and the one in John 21 where Jesus appears to the disciples after the resurrection are the only references to him in the entire Bible. So I guess we have John to thank for helping us know both Nicodemus and Nathanael. It would be interesting to see which biblical characters John tells us about that the others omit.

But going back to my initial thing about integrity and duplicity, this is a reminder that those aren’t enough. I can have these things and still have a hard, unloving heart. In fact, they can work against me if I rely too much on them and not on you. They need to be an integral part of my life. They are an important part of my life. But I can’t build my whole life on it because, well, if I have not love then I am nothing.

Father, I’m grateful for who I am, but I can also definitely see where those shortcomings are. Well, at least some of them. I know I have some shortcomings to which I am blind. Forgive me. Love others through me. Be glorified through me. Forgive me for my superior attitude sometimes. I worship and praise you.

I pray all of this in Jesus and with your Holy Spirit,

Peter & John — 8:14-25

Acts 8:14-25 NIV
[14] When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. [15] When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, [16] because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. [17] Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. [18] When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money [19] and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” [20] Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! [21] You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. [22] Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. [23] For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.” [24] Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.” [25] After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.

Dear God, I love the image of Peter and John going out as a team. I wonder how much their enthusiasm for the belief of the Samaritans was informed by their experiences with Jesus and Samaria. The ones that come to the top of my mind are the stories of Jesus and the Samaritan woman and the well (followed by the entire village becoming part of the story), the time John asked Jesus if he wanted John to call down fire on the Samaritans for refusing Jesus to go through there and Jesus rebuked him, and then the parable of “The Good Samaritan.” Without these lessons from Jesus himself, would Peter and John have rejected this new faith from Samaria?

Then there’s the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I don’t pray this nearly enough for people. Whether it’s my children or my coworkers, I need to be more mindful of this. I have my own story of when I felt like I was baptized in the Holy Spirit and it was when my life was truly changed.

Father, I would be remiss in this email if I didn’t stop and thank you for some particularly great things you’ve done for me and those around me this week. Really, thank you. And now I pray that your Holy Spirit will come and flood those I know and love. Spirit, move. Become part of those who have called on the name of Jesus and believed. Fill them with your peace, love, joy, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, kindness, and self control. Protect them from Satan’s attacks and love them well.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Peter & John — John 14:5,8,22

[5] Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”
John 14:8 NASB
[8] Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
John 14:22 NASB
[22] Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, what then has happened that You are going to disclose Yourself to us and not to the world?”

Dear God, I want to look at John as writer and storyteller this morning. He gives us a unique window into the Last Supper. Thomas, Philip, and the good Judas get call outs here. I don’t know that it’s as important what they asked (they were basically all just trying to make sense of what was happening around them) as it is that John was going through the evening in his memory and these are some of the specifics he remembered. “Thomas asked Him where He was going.” “Philip wanted to see a revelation of God (that one was pretty silly of him to say—Jesus didn’t seem to like that one).” “Judas (gotta be clear which one) wanted to understand why things were so shrouded and confusing.” These might have all been things John himself wanted to ask and that’s why he remembered them. Or maybe he was remembering Jesus’ answers and then thought back to which questions had provoked each one. Either way, John is painting a unique picture of that evening. The disciples were confused, scared, insecure, and a bit intimidated.

Father, thank you for these 11 men. Thank you that you gave the early church a group of people who were imperfect but cake together to continue the work here on earth. Thank you that one day we will all follow you and go where you will go. Finally, thank you for John taking the time to write all of this down and give it to us.

In Jesus’ name I pray,
