Isaiah 9:1-7

Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever. The land of Zebulun and Naphtali will be humbled, but there will be a time in the future when Galilee of the Gentiles, which lies along the road that runs between the Jordan and the sea, will be filled with glory. The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine. You will enlarge the nation of Israel, and its people will rejoice. They will rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest and like warriors dividing the plunder. For you will break the yoke of their slavery and lift the heavy burden from their shoulders. You will break the oppressor’s rod, just as you did when you destroyed the army of Midian. The boots of the warrior and the uniforms bloodstained by war will all be burned. They will be fuel for the fire. For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!

Isaiah 9:1-7

Dear God, I confess that I have no idea what this government looks like. All I really understand from these seven verses is that Jesus is the child. Other than that, I don’t get it. I don’t understand what it looks like to have the government referred to here. Is it Heaven? Is it some sort of Heaven on Earth? I don’t get it. Apparently, I don’t need to get it either.

Of course, today is Christmas. In my earnest belief, the child referred to here was born at some point (possibly the spring?), grew up poor and having to move around, lived and amazing life, and then put it all on a cross with the sole goal being to reconcile us to you. Of course, all of that would be useless without the resurrection. That’s what gives the sacrifice it’s power.

Father, I don’t understand your plan. Mary and Joseph had no idea what was to come. And I don’t know how all of the things going on in my life will shake out. But I know that this is another day that I need to use to worship you and represent you as well as I can.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Luke 2:8-12

That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”

Luke 2:8-12

Dear God, what a message! The Messiah is here and he couldn’t be born into a much more lowly state. He’s in a trough in a barn. What exactly will this child’s path be and how will he become the Messiah? I know these shepherd will later go around telling everyone what they saw, but I wonder what was going on with them a week later. A year later. 10 years later. Did they remember? If they had made it the full 33 years of Jesus’ earthly life, how would they have responded to the crucifixion knowing what they knew from this night? Would they have been disillusioned?

And what if Mary’s and Joseph’s feelings that night. They had been told who Jesus was. Did they feel like they were failing you? Right out of the box, did Joseph feel like he was letting you and this baby down?

My point in all of this is that even when things might appear bad they can be part of your plan. Herod chased the young family out of Israel. They were poor. Jesus was rejected by the established church. He was ultimately killed by then. Poverty. Death. Rejection. Anger. Fear. It all combined to result in me being able to sit here this morning and worship you. And the story is Still told 2,000 years later.

Father, help me to NOT try to read the tea leaves and interpret what is going on by evaluating the physical world around me. Help me to simply embrace you, worship you, and trust you. That’s it, really. That’s the most important thing I can do today.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Chances to Love

Dynamic Catholic Advent Devotion of the Day

Dear God, I am going to have several opportunities to love others today. I will get to write letters that will show love. I get to talk to one of my closest friends and show him love. I get to ring a bell for The Salvation Army and show love to everyone who walks by me. I get to go to a funeral for a friend’s mother and show that friend and her family love. I get to show my daughter love. I get to show my wife love. That’s a lot of opportunity. Will I take advantage of it, or will I let it go by and need more love from these people than I give?

That can be the problem that I hope I’m getting better about–being a needy person. One of the weaknesses I’ve had to confront over the last 20 years is my own insecurity and need for accolades, love and affection. When I was first married, that neediness was very fatiguing for my wife. I was a pit of seemingly endless need. But as I’ve grown closer to you, as you have matured me and healed my soul, I have been able to need less and learned to just offer my presence to someone without feeling the “need” to get something back in exchange for my effort.

Father, make me what you need me to be today. Love freely through me. Give freely through me. Be glorified through me. If possible, use me to heal hearts, souls, minds, and bodies for your glory’s sake.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Just an open prayer

Dear God, I looked at some of my traditional sources for scripture on which I could meditate today and nothing was really hitting me. My soul is a little unsettled this morning. Why? On paper, everything in my life looks really good. And yet I find myself with a sinking feeling. Is it the upcoming Christmas week? Is it the week off that I’ll have between Christmas and New Year’s Day? Is it visiting with loved ones and trying to avoid any minefields that are out there?

Maybe I should go with the prayer that the woman left as a request at our Center yesterday. In it she asked for prayer for her children. She wanted their peace, safety, and happiness. She asked for a successful and easy pregnancy. She asked for a safe place to live. She asked for a good foundation in life. How many of us have those same desires for our children and ourselves. Her prayer is my prayer, and I join her in asking you to answer it in your wisdom for her and for those I live.

Father, it feels like I’m rambling a little here, but at the end of the day I just want you to be a part of my life. I want you to be my motivation, my rock, my redeemer, my provider, my defender, my guide, and my savior. I want you to be that for every person I love as well. I want you to be that for the world. So glorify yourself. Lead our world and national leaders. Guide their hearts. Love them. Help them to humbly submit themselves to you and listen to your Holy Spirit. Please do the same for our state and local leaders, those elected and non-elected. And help me to know the place you have for me in my family, my community, and my world.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Luke 2:1-5

At that time the Roman emperor, Augustus, decreed that a census should be taken throughout the Roman Empire. (This was the first census taken when Quirinius was governor of Syria.) All returned to their own ancestral towns to register for this census. And because Joseph was a descendant of King David, he had to go to Bethlehem in Judea, David’s ancient home. He traveled there from the village of Nazareth in Galilee. He took with him Mary, to whom he was engaged, who was now expecting a child.

Luke 2:1-5

Dear God, I read this passage and can’t help but feel relieved that there’s some failsafe in your plan to keep me from messing up your will too badly. Why? Because Augustus was sitting in Rome, thought he himself was god (at least, he made others treat him that way), and yet he was fulfilling prophecy. So did you cause him to do it or did you just know in advance that he would do it? I believe it’s the latter. But my point is, you know everything I have done and will do and yet Jesus came for me anyway.

Father, help me to live within the peace of knowing that I just need to stay in the moment, worship you in the moment, love in the moment, serve in the moment, and lead in the moment. I offer you all of that for your will’s sake and for your glory.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Like 1:72-73

He has been merciful to our ancestors by remembering his sacred covenant— the covenant he swore with an oath to our ancestor Abraham.

Luke 1:72-73

Dear God, I’m guessing that in the midst of suffering under Rome the Israelites talked about your covenant with Abraham a lot. This is the second time I’ve seen it show up in the Christmas story with the first time being the Magnificat when Mary greeted Zechariah’s wife Elizabeth in their home.

I suppose that there are times when I am suffering that I look to your promises. But what exactly are your promises? Much like even the people in this story who were thinking you were there to physically rescue them from Rome, I think I sometimes mistakenly expect you to remove a burden or a yoke. But sometimes your plan includes the burden—either for my good or for someone else’s. So in this case your plan wasn’t to overthrow Rome with Jesus, but to create a new covenant that called people into deeper love, forgiveness and peace than they had ever known or considered. In fact, now that o think about it, I can’t really think of an Old Testament prophet or character who spoke of love and forgiveness the way Jesus did. This was a brand new message.

Father, help me to sink into your peace. Help me to have energy that is fueled by your Holy Spirit, by love, and by grace. And help me to spread and encourage that peace in others.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Luke 1:67-70

Then his father, Zechariah, was filled with the Holy Spirit and gave this prophecy: “Praise the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has visited and redeemed his people. He has sent us a mighty Savior from the royal line of his servant David, just as he promised through his holy prophets long ago.

Luke 1:67-70

Dear God, the theme for my morning seems to be gratitude. I am grateful for the different things you are doing in my life. I am grateful for the prayers to which I’m starting to see some answers. Especially after seeing how some people in our community are living, I am grateful for my home and my income. There are a lot of things for which I should be grateful—too man even more me to realize. I take so much for granted.

So what is my calling in this bounty? What would you have me do when you say yes to my prayers? What can I do to glorify you and spread your blessing to others? Those are the questions that are resonating with me this morning. If “to whom much is given much is required,” then I owe everyone a lot.

Father, help me to be your servant in every moment of this day. Love others through me. Be glorified through me. Make our community better through my faithful work to you. Help me to do all of this with one goal—to bring others into your presence and worship you.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Matthew 3:1-2

In those days John the Baptist came to the Judean wilderness and began preaching. His message was, “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near. ”

Matthew 3:1-2

Dear God, I saw a video this morning from an advent series that I’ve been watching when I wake up. This one talked about a John the Baptist, how he was preparing the way, and if we shouldn’t be asking ourselves how we can help others prepare for the coming of Jesus this Christmas season. I thought that was a pretty good question/thought, so I decided to talk to you about it.

I went to Target last night to purchase a Christmas ornament for an ornament exchange my wife and I are doing with our church group today. I was looking for something with a spiritual flavor (since this was my church group and all), but the ONLY ornament that had even slight spiritual overtones was a boxy-looking church. Everything else was elves, toys, and Star Wars characters. I was stunned.

Movies I enjoy, like Elf and The Santa Clause, for a few years now (and it didn’t start there because Miracle on 34th Street had the same message) have focused on people believing in the Christmas Spirit and Santa. There is probably a role for all Christians to play in preparing the way for Christ this Christmas.

Father, show me what to do about this in each moment. Show me how to be an encouragement to others and how to do my part to usher in the Christmas season. Help me to be your ambassador for light, holiness, peace, love, and repentance.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

Ephesians 6:13-18

Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Ephesians 6:13-18

Dear God, thinking about verse 18, I’m getting better at praying consistently for others, but I could be so much better still.

I guess there are different categories for organizing those for whom I need to pray. There’s family for whom my wife and I pray together every day. Then there are friends, but I usually focus on specific needs here instead of praying for them proactively. There’s the work you have given my wife and me to do. There’s our church and it’s leadership (this is point where I start to fail). There’s are the churches in our community. There are community issues and leaders. Then there are the leaders in our state, country and world. Then there’s just the good old, “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”

Father, help me to truly strap on my armor every day and become better about more comprehensive prayer. Goodness knows there are enough things to pray over in our world and country. But for now, as I type this, I very earnestly pray that you Kingdom will come and your will will be done here on earth.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen

“Strange Way to Save the World”

“Strange Way to Save the World” (by 4Him)

Dear God, this song came to my mind earlier this week. I think it must be the most underused, underrated Christmas song I know of. Therefore, I thought I would just type out the words to it as my prayer to you today:

I’m sure he must have been surprised
At where this road had taken them
Cuz never in a million lives
Would he have dreamed of Bethlehem
And standing at the manger
He saw with his own eyes
The message from the angel come to life
And Joseph said

Why me? I’m just a simple man of trade
Why him, with all the rulers in the world?
Why here, inside this stable filled with hay?
Why her? She’s just an ordinary girl.
Now I’m not one to second guess
What angels have to say
But this is such a strange way to save the world

To think of how it could have been
If Jesus had come as he deserved
There would have been no Bethlehem
No lowly shepherds at his birth
But Joseph knew the reason
Love had to reach so far
And as he held the savior in his arms
He must have thought

Why me? I’m just a simple man of trade
Why him, with all the rulers in the world?
Why here, inside this stable filled with hay?
Why her? she’s just an ordinary girl.
Now I’m not one to second guess
What angels have to say
But this is such a strange way to save the world

Father, thank you for the weird, strange path for Jesus’ life. Thank you that he knew poverty, stress, and suffering. Thank you for his brave parents and your provision for them. Thank you for saving me.

In Jesus’ name I pray,

Amen
